Club History

The Star Diving Club was formed in 1970 as a collaboration between the late Wally Clark and Sue Erskine, who was the first Chief Coach.  The club started it's life at the sports centre in the heart of Guildford, now replaced by the Odeon cinema, before moving to its current home at Spectrum. I joined the club in the late 1970's, when my son learnt to dive and was persuaded by Wally to train as a diving coach taking on the mantle of chief coach in the late 80's.

Over the years the club has slowly developed from primarily teaching safe diving at a recreational level, to up to county standard, with the club meeting once a week. However, coaching at a competitive level, up to national standard, was achieved with a limited number of divers, over the early years of the club's history.

The club membership was around the 50/60 level for many years, due mainly to the ability to provide coaching and pool time. However, a very brave decision was made in 2009 by the club committee to appoint a full time Head Coach, Jo Hewat. This has resulted in an expansion of coaching and pool time, allowing the club to provide a variety of training levels from beginners up to national standard, with some recent impressive results at national competitions.

Club membership now fluctuates between 220 -250 and provides a basis for further development of the abilities of our membership, which will only be limited to the availability of coaches and pool time. Our current Head coach, Stephen Hewat, has recently undertaken an extensive project of visiting several local schools to identify talented individuals showing an aptitude towards diving. This has resulted in a further group being accommodated within the club structure.

Therefore, we continue to grow towards the club as envisioned by Wally and Sue back in 1970.
